Child Friendly Kitchens

Kitchens can be dangerous places for little kids to run around and play in. There are lots of sharp corners; the floor near the sink may be wet and slippery; kids may touch hot objects such as pots and oven doors, they may even accidentally cut themselves – if they are able to access where the knives and other cutlery are kept. If you have children, or have little children visit you frequently, it would be a good idea to make your kitchen more child-friendly.

Making a kitchen more child-friendly need not cost too much. You do not need to replace all your equipment; you just need to make a few adjustments. It’s a home improvement project that can be done over a weekend (or two).

You may need to buy safety snaps to hold cupboard doors and drawers that hold cutlery shut. You may also need to get floor mats and place these near the sink so it can absorb water and make the floor less slippery. It would also be best if, in case you have any breakable displays in your kitchen, these be replaced with more durable home decorations. Finally, replace your kitchen faucets with units that would be easy for adults to use but quite difficult for children to play with.

All these little things can help make your kitchen a safer place for a child to be in. Of course, these entire safety precautions mean nothing if the child is left to fend for itself. Never leave a child unsupervised, whether it’s in the kitchen, lounge or bedroom. Monitoring the child is still the best way to prevent accidents.
